It's a big area so that can be a tough question. Most people decide on where to live in this area based first and foremost upon time needed to commute to and from work and what size and quality of housing their budget will allow. From there, individual buyers has varying needs and will examine a whole host of criteria including schools, proximity to transportation, population density, etc.

I am licensed by the state of Virginia to help my clients buy and/or sell residential real estate anywhere in the state. However, since I live in northern Virginia this is where I focus my business. I have sold homes as far north as Leesburg (Loudoun County), as far west as Warrenton (Fauquier County), and as far south as Woodbridge (Prince William County). However, the bulk of my Virginia real estate business is focused in Arlington County, Fairfax County, and the city of Alexandria.
