Northern Virginia can be loosely defined as the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudon, and Prince William plus the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park.  See it all with this amazing interactive map of northern Virginia.

Notes on Northern Virginia:
Northern Virginia can be a great place to live -- I've lived here for more than a decade and love it!  Not sure where in nothern Virginia you'd like to be? It's a big area so that can be a tough question.  Most people decide on where to live in this area based first and foremost upon time needed to commute to and from work and what size and quality of housing their budget will allow.  From there, individual buyers has varying needs and will examine a whole host of criteria including schools, proximity to transportation, population density, etc.
