Notes on Alexandria, Fairfax County: Recommendations of the Base Closure and Realignment Commission's (read more about BRAC's work and recommendations) to move a number of jobs to Ft. Belvoir have led some people to believe that southeastern Fairfax County, including Alexandria, may be looking at a significant increase in housing demand -- especially for higher quality housing than what has been available until recently. To that end, places like Holly Acres and Groveton Woods are two examples of new/newer townhomes along Rte. 1/Richmond Highway. (Just south of Alexandria, Fairfax County is Lorton, one of the fastest growing areas in the entire county and another community likely to experience significant growth as a result of jobs being relocated to Ft. Belvoir.) Because of the concerns that were expressed about whether the transportation infrastructure can effectively cope with the expected population growth, expected job transfers have been reduced from over 20,000 to around 9,000 until the infrastructure in this part of the county catches up.
