Notes on Dupont Circle: The Dupont Circle neighborhood can trace its name back to 1882, when Congress designated the traffic circle "Dupont" in honor of Rear Admiral Samuel F. Dupont who captured the Confederate port of Port Royal, South Carolina during the Civil War. Today the Dupont Circle neighborhood is one of the city's most well-known because of its restaurants, nightlife, and architecture, all within walking distance of the K Street Corridor business section of downtown D.C. It also sits on the southern edge of Embassy Row. The neighborhood is dominated by the traffic circle within which is the Samuel F. Dupont fountain that is a favorite subject for photographers.
The retail areas of Dupont Circle include P Street, N.W., Connecticut Avenue, N.W., and 17th Street, N.W. The neighborhood has the city's largest collection of private art galleries, as well as a number of bookstores, boutiques, and restaurants. There are no large grocery stories in Dupont Circle, but there are a number of smaller markets and specialty food stores. The closest chain grocery stores are a Whole Foods to the east of the neighborhood on P Street, and to the north at the Safeway in Adams Morgan. The Dupont Circle Citizens Association strives "to keep [the] neighborhood clean, green, historic, safe, diverse and a fun and friendly place to live." The Washington, D.C. Economic Partnership and the Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets work to promote the economic development and continued strength of the neighborhood's businesses. Dupont Circle has a variety of housing options, but most are rowhouses and mid-rise condos. The area is served by the Dupont Circle metro station as well as by Metrobus.
