Notes on Del Ray: Del Ray is a charming neighborhood just south of Arlington and north of Old Town, founded in the late 1800's. In the early 1900's the community became a bedroom community for those working in Washington, D.C. Today Del Ray is known as a neighborhood offering unique housing and shopping options in a community that has a small town feel. The housing stock is varied in age and architectural style, but tends to be dominated by single family homes and townhouses (e.g., Warwick Village); there are a limited number of condos and they tend to be garden-style buildings (e.g., Auburn Village).
The Del Ray Citizens Assn. works to "keep its members informed of many aspects of Alexandria City life, including land use, public safety, volunteer opportunities, City Commissions, Alexandria Public Schools, parks and recreation facilities, transportation, business, housing, and many other major issues which impact quality of life." The Del Ray Sun is the community's newspaper. For the past 30 years the Potomac West Business Assn. has been "undertaking special programs, neighborhood improvement projects, and promotional events" to support the Del Ray neighborhood. The restaurants and shopping in Del Ray are unique, not national chains, and concentrated along Mt. Vernon Avenue. There's also a small weekly farmer's market on Mt. Vernon Avenue from April through September. There are no large grocery stores in Del Ray, but there are several within a 10-minute drive.
The Braddock Road metro station borders the southeastern end of the neighborhood, and Del Ray is also well served by Metrobus and Alexandria's DASH bus service. On the eastern edge of Del Ray is the Monroe Street Bridge, which transfers drivers from roughly Old Town to Del Ray and neighboring Potomac Yards. The bridge is undergoing a total realignment. The related construction is major, but the end result will be a much easier drive. Read more about the Potomac Yard Development.
