Notes on Columbia Heights:
Columbia Heights is one of the most talked about neighborhoods in D.C. today. If you haven't been to Columbia Heights lately, you haven't been to Columbia Heights. With the opening of the neighborhood's Green Line metro station in 1999, Columbia Heights has been on a track for rapid re-development. The Development Corporation of Columbia Heights is working to effect change in all areas of the community so that it adds to the overall quality of life for all the neighborhood's residents. The D.C. government has a plan for the future of the Columbia Heights. Housing stock in Columbia Heights is dominated by townhouses, but there are garden-style and mid-rise apartments and condos -- and that housing stock is undergoing rapid change. There are any number of construction projects on many blocks throughout Columbia Heights, ranging from rehabs of townhouses and apartment buildings into condos to entirely new construction. Retail is also rapidly changing, with a major retail complex at 14th and Harvard Streets, N.W. under construction. This is only a block from the main grocery story in Columbia Heights, a new Giant. Harris Teeter is also scheduled to open a store here and while the nearest Whole Foods is a short drive south on 14th Street to P Street, N.W., there is a drive to bring Whole Foods to Columbia Heights. The neighborhood is served by the Columbia Heights metro station and is well served by Metrobus. The Rock Creek Parkway is a convenient, short drive away through the neighborhood of Mt. Pleasant to the west.
