Notes on Capitol Hill: Capitol Hill is a lovely residential neighborhood dominated by row houses from the Victorian era, mature trees, and parks. Major commercial areas are limited, but include Union Station and its environs, Eastern Market and its environs, and along 8th Street, S.E., south of Pennsylvania Avenue, S.E. (including Barracks Row) to the Navy Yard. There are a number of small corner markets, dry cleaners, and other small establishments sprinkled throughout Capitol Hill. Major grocery stores include a Safeway and upcoming Harris Teeter, both near the Potomac Avenue Metro station. The neighborhood is served by the Capitol South, Eastern Market, Potomac Avenue, Stadium-Armory, and Union Station metro stations as well as Metrobus. I-395 and I-295 highways are convenient, short drives. Union Station is one of Amtrak's flagship stations, and also serves Virginia (VRE) and Maryland (MARC) commuter rail lines.
The mission of Barracks Row Main Street is to revitalize 8th Street SE as a vibrant commercial corridor reconnecting Capitol Hill to the Anacostia River using historic preservation and the arts as economic development tools. Barracks Row is Washington's oldest commercial corridor and gets its name from its proximity to the old Marine Barracks.
The Capitol Hill Business Improvement District provides enhanced services that are designed to augment, not replace, services that the District of Columbia government provides. These supplementary services include: security, street cleaning, maintenance and graffiti removal, streetscape improvements, marketing and promotional services and community outreach. The Capitol Hill Historic District is one of the largest historic districts in the country.
