Notes on Alexandria, Fairfax County: Recommendations of the Base Closure and Realignment Commission's (read more about BRAC's work and recommendations) had been to move a number of jobs to Ft. Belvoir, which led some people to believe that southeastern Fairfax County, including Alexandria, would be looking at a significant increase in housing demand -- especially for higher quality housing than what has been available until recently. To that end, places like Holly Acres and Groveton Woods were developed and sold. In the fall of 2008, however, those jobs headed for Ft. Belvoir were re-routed to the Mark Center area of the city of Alexandria (near the intersection of Seminary Rd. and Beauregard Street). However, a major hospital construction project is underway at Ft. Belvoir, so it is unclear now what will happen to future housing demand in the Ft. Belvoir area. Regardless, many of the communities in Alexandria, Fairfax County represent some of the most affordably priced homes in northern Virginia.
