The neighborhood is also convenient to the neighboring areas of Ballston to the northwest and Clarendon to the northeast, where Ashton Heights residents can take advantage of shops and restaurants. Area grocery stores include Harris Teeter on Glebe Road, Giant on Monroe Street, and Whole Foods between Clarendon and Wilson Boulevards. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the area is comprised of about 1,800 homes ranging in style from brick ranches to colonials to bungalows. There is also a smattering of condos and apartments, but the area is dominated by single-family detached homes that have a wonderful charm. Created by Ashton Jones in the early 1920's, the area remains a desirable, convenient location for many residents.
