Notes on the city of Alexandria:
When people say "Alexandria," they're most often referring to the city of Alexandria, which is sandwiched between Fairfax County to the south and west, the Potomac River to the east, and Arlington County to the north. (There's also a part of Fairfax County known as Alexandria.) It was originally part of the 10 square miles set aside for our nation's capital, but was returned to the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1846 by the U.S. Congress after Alexandria residents voted in favor of returning to the Commonwealth.

With a history spanning more than 250 years, sections of Alexandria like Old Town have a very colonial feel when it comes to artchitecture. Alexandria's waterfront at the base of King Street is a wonderful place to visit as well as shop and eat. Some of the more well-known neighborhoods in Alexandria include Del Ray, Old Town, and Rosemont, each of which offers the resident a unique feeling and choice of housing.  Alexandria bill's itself these days as "The Fun Side of the Potomac."

At almost 16 square miles, the city is manageble by car or bus, with service by Metro's Blue and Yellow Lines at both the King Street and Braddock Road stations, the Blue Line at the Van Dorn Street, and the Yellow Line at the Eisenhower Avenue stations. The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) and Amtrak (station code ALX) also stop at the King Street station. A mix of garden-style buildings (1-4 floors), mid-rise buildings (5-8 floors), townhouses, and single family detached homes are within walking distance of all Metro stations at a variety of price points.
